Frequently asked

Straight answers, including the ones that don't suit us.

Twenty-three questions we get asked most often by Brisbane homeowners and business owners. If yours isn't here, call 0416 085 122.

Sizing & suitability

What size system do I actually need?

Most Brisbane homes land between 6.6 kW and 13.2 kW, but the right answer depends on how much power you use and when, not on how much roof you have.

We pull twelve months of your interval data from Energex before quoting. A household using 22 kWh a day with a 4pm peak needs a very different system from one using the same total overnight.

My roof faces east and west. Is that a problem?

Often it is an advantage. North-facing arrays generate the most total energy, but they peak at midday when many households are empty and export is worth 5c. An east–west split produces slightly less overall while generating more during the morning and evening, when you are actually using it.

Because self-consumed power is worth 33c and exported power is worth 5c, the "worse" array frequently saves more money.

I have a tile roof. Does that cost more?

Usually a few hundred dollars more than Colorbond, because each mounting point requires a tile to be lifted, a bracket flashed and the tile re-seated. Terracotta is more fragile than concrete and slower to work on.

It is quoted up front, and we carry spare tiles in common profiles so a cracked one gets replaced the same day.

My roof is shaded part of the day. Is solar still worth it?

Frequently yes, but the design has to change. Shading on a single panel in a string drags the whole string down unless you use optimisers or micro-inverters. We model shading across a full year at the assessment and specify accordingly.

If shading is severe enough that the system will not pay for itself, we will tell you that rather than sell you optimisers to paper over it.

Can I add panels to my existing system later?

Sometimes. It depends on spare inverter capacity, your Energex export approval, and whether matching panels are still available. Mixing panel models on one string causes mismatch losses.

In many cases a second, separate array with its own inverter works out better than extending the original. We will tell you which applies after looking at your existing setup.

Cost, rebates & savings

What does solar cost in Brisbane?

There is no honest flat answer before someone has seen your roof, anyone quoting one is guessing. Four things drive it: how much power you actually use, your roof material and pitch, whether the switchboard needs upgrading, and whether you add a battery. The pricing page breaks each one down.

What moves the number: switchboard or meter upgrades, two-storey or steep-pitch roofs, tile flashing, long cable runs, and asbestos-clad eaves. All of it is identified at the assessment and written into the quote.

What rebates can I get, and do I have to claim them?

Small-scale Technology Certificates come off every accredited solar install, around $3,000 on a 10 kW Brisbane system. Batteries attract the federal Cheaper Home Batteries discount, roughly 30% of the installed cost.

You claim nothing and fill in nothing. We assign both at the point of sale, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

Why is my feed-in tariff so low now?

Because so much solar now exports at the same time. In South East Queensland the feed-in tariff is set by your retailer rather than the government, and it has drifted down to around 5c/kWh.

This is the single biggest change in solar economics over the last five years. It is why we size systems around self-consumption and why batteries have become worth a serious look.

Is a battery worth it yet?

For a household using 20 kWh+ per day with a solid evening peak, payback on a 10 kWh battery currently lands somewhere between 7 and 10 years. Inside its warranted life, with blackout backup thrown in.

If you are out all day and use very little after dark, it does not stack up yet, and we will tell you so.

Do you offer finance or payment plans?

We accept a deposit with the balance on commissioning, and we work with two accredited green-loan providers. We take no commission on either, so we have no interest in steering you toward finance you do not need.

We will not sign you up to a solar lease or a power purchase agreement. In our view they rarely favour the homeowner.

Will solar add value to my house?

Australian valuation surveys consistently find a positive effect, with a well-documented, warranted system on a recent inverter being worth considerably more at sale than an unbranded system of unknown age.

We provide a full documentation pack, panel and inverter serials, compliance certificate, commissioning photos and production model, precisely so it can be handed to a buyer.

Installation & approvals

How long does it take from quote to switch-on?

Our median is 11 days. Energex connection approval is usually 2 to 5 business days, then we book the install. Battery jobs and three-phase export approvals can add a week.

Will my power be off during installation?

Yes, for two to four hours while we work in the switchboard. We tell you the window the day before so you can plan around anything that matters, a home office, medical equipment, or a fridge full of stock.

Do I need to be home on install day?

For the switchboard work and the handover, yes. Many customers step out during the roof work and return for commissioning. We will not leave the site without walking someone through the system and the monitoring app.

Who deals with Energex?

We do. We lodge the connection application, manage export-limit negotiation where it applies, and submit the electrical safety certificate afterwards. You will need to arrange a meter reconfiguration with your retailer, and we tell you exactly what to ask for.

I'm in a body corporate or a character overlay. Can you still install?

Usually. Body corporate approval needs a resolution and we supply the documentation pack for it. Character and heritage overlays generally restrict street visibility rather than solar itself, a rear-pitch layout normally satisfies them. Our Coorparoo job is an example.

Do you install equipment I've bought myself?

No. Our ten-year workmanship warranty depends on controlling the specification, and we cannot stand behind hardware we did not select or source. We will happily service, repair or extend a system another company installed.

Warranties, storms & aftercare

What warranties come with the system?

Panels carry a 25-year product and performance warranty. Inverters carry 10 years, extendable to 15 on most models. On top of both, Annergy warrants its own workmanship for 10 years, the mounting, the flashing, the cabling and the switchboard work.

What if my system underperforms?

Your quote includes a modelled monthly production figure. If your system falls more than 10% short of it across any twelve-month period, and it is not caused by new shading or a grid fault, we return and remedy it at no charge. That clause is in the contract.

Will the panels survive a Brisbane hailstorm?

The panels we install are certified to withstand 25 mm hail at 83 km/h, which covers most of what Brisbane throws at a roof. A severe supercell can exceed that, as 2020 and 2025 both demonstrated.

We photograph and document every array at commissioning, so if you do need to claim, your insurer gets a dated baseline rather than an argument.

Does a battery keep the lights on in a blackout?

Only if it is wired for it. Backup requires a changeover device and a defined set of essential circuits. It is not automatic just because you own a battery. We quote it explicitly, either as essential circuits or whole-home backup.

Worth knowing: a grid-connected solar system without a battery shuts down in a blackout by law, even in bright sun.

Do panels need cleaning?

Brisbane rainfall does most of the work. Under trees, near industry, or during a dry winter, output can drift 5–10% and a clean pays for itself. We include it in our servicing visits rather than pushing an annual contract nobody needs.

My installer has gone out of business. Can you take over?

Yes. It is a large part of our service work. We start with a $189 health check and a written report on the state of the system, then quote any remediation separately. There is no obligation to proceed after the report.

Where the original manufacturer warranties are still valid, we will pursue those claims for you even though we did not sell the equipment.
